Will pet stores offer discounts and donations to families fostering rescued puppies?

This item was filled under [ Pet Gate ]

We’ve decided to help a local rescue organization by fostering some puppies (and mom, if she’s with them). We know that we’ve got some puppies headed our way on Wednesday, but don’t know the details yet – how many, what breed, etc. If there are more than two pupppies, we think we’ll have to house them in a penned off area in our basement, instead of in the kitchen with a baby gate up to keep them enclosed. I’ve just been pricing dog pens online & they run anywhere from to well over 0.

Are there any pet store chains that will offer a discount or donation to me, if I let them know that this purchase would be to help rescued pets?

Petco will occassionally offer a 10% discount to rescue organizations. Ask for a letter from the rescue stating that you’ll be fostering pups… then phone Petco and ask for the store manager to see if they will offer you a discount. DO NOT just go in the store… phone ahead.

Most rescue groups I’ve looked into provide things like this for people who foster dogs for them (hence why people who end up getting the dogs pay for them). Before you go out and buy anything, double check with your group to see what they provide for you. Good for you for fostering!!

Your best bet is to ask the manager at the store. You might get lucky. I would think you would have better luck with an independently owned store than a large chain. Otherwise, you might check craigslist or the classifieds to see if someone is selling theirs.

If you haven’t already, ask the rescue if they have a pen you can borrow. I work at a shelter and we get crates, pens, beds, etc. donated all the time.

I don’t know. Best idea is to open the phone book or go to an online phone book (www.superpages.com), type in your city and "petstores" or pet supplies and start dialing and asking.

What a good idea, I’m going to ask myself and see what happens!
