What are some solutions when confining a puppy?

This item was filled under [ Pet Gate ]

I have a three month old german shep. cross. I’m wanting to confine him just to the living room for several reasons. However, we had a gate blocking the doorway in a dimond shape grate design and he was able to crawl over it like one would climb over a chain link fence. I bought him a new gate that has vertical bars and a small door that cats could get through but he is able to climb over-top of that as well (by standing on the cross bar for the small door).

These two types of models (the diamond shape design & vertical design) were the only ones at the pet store.

I’ve tried crate training but he yelps and cries every minute he’s awake when he’s put inside unless he is outside.

I live in a rental property that does not allow pets to be outside alone so i can’t leave him outside.

What else can i do? I’m getting very frustrated
i’ve thought about those electrical devices but they are VERY expensive. It’s not something i can afford right now.

The only place that has a door that we could use would be the basement and i’m not sure how i feel about leaving him in the basement away from all activity in the house.

We had to make a gate ourselves. It was made out of 1×1′s for a frame and plexy-glass so the dog could still see. Attached a board to the corner and put hinges on it for a swinging gate and a latch. Ok, it was a little tacky, but it was only needed for a brief time and the pup learned him boundries.

Wow, he’s talented! You might just have to break down and put him in a different room that has a door. Hopefully he can’t get through that. There are higher baby gates, etc. but if your dog climbs, he’ll just climb over them, too. You could search online to see if there’s a new gate you can order that might work. If I were you, though, I’d put him in a bedroom or a bathroom with a door so he can’t get out.

Most dogs cry at first when adapting to being in a crate. I crate trained my dogs. You just cannot give in when he cries. Shaking a can of pennies worked for my one. Due to size, a gate is most likely not the best option. Try saying no in a firm voice whenever he leaves the room & rewarding when it stays in.

Get one of the electrical devices to containe them in your yard, The dog gets a small shock when they try getting out of the contained area.

You really need to do the crate training. I know it’s hard to listen to them cry. However by giving in when they cry you teach them that crying gets him out of the crate. Try putting a blanket that smells like you and some toys and a few treats. Be a strong owner and don’t give in to the little guys cry!
