Keeping puppy out of 'cat' room… Is my gate idea okay?
Soo..I have a gate issue. I am getting a puppy on friday and the fancy gate I ordered with a cat door does NOT fit.. it’s an awkward sized doorway. 47 inches…
So I have a brilliant Idea but I would like some advice before I waste anymore money.. so I thought I’d waste some yahoo pts.
I’d like to return this stupid gate, and purchase a cheaper one without a cat door but perhaps mount it 6-8 inches off the ground so the cats may get UNDER it but the dog can’t?
Can this be done? I don’t know crap about baby/pet gates.. do they need to be mounted from the floor? If they are pressure mounted I don’t see why I cant mount it off the ground for the added bonus of a cat entrance and added height to keep the dog out?
Anyone done this?
Giant breed dog.. by the time it is allowed to not be under my constant watch it won’t be a concern about getting underneath. She’ll be twice the size of the cats to start out anyway!
I have an old grumpy cat and It is very important to me they have their own place to go to retreat to get away from the dog, eat… not have the dog get special litter box treats.
Just want to know if anyone has mounted a gate off the floor?!
Also I understand the dog can try to charge through the gate if given the opportunity. Just wondering if mounting it off the floor it won’t hold as good as it would other wise.

Just get a baby gate, they are cheap and leave it on the ground cause cats are amazing jumpers. I have seen a three legged cat jump from one side of the room to the other. And with an amount for the cat to get out under it a puppy could too. They are good at squeezing through things.
well the puppy will probably go under if up that high. let the cat jump it.
That is exactly what I did when I had dogs. It works great. Cats can squeeze under spaces much tighter than that, though. I always kept mine about 4 inches off the floor. That way they can choose to jump over or squirm under.
Good for you for thinking about your cats, too! I’ve always thought it was important for cats to have a retreat. That’s especially important if they stay indoors.
I also cut a mouse hole looking thing in the bottom of my basement door so the cats could go there hassle free, too (I have lots of indoor cats!)
actually, if you dont want ur dog to go through the cat door, then keep in a big box with a thick quilt and toys inside wen you cant check on your puppy. i did it to my dog until he got too big and bit threw the box.lol
It would probably be possible if the gate was off the ground that your puppy could squeeze under it. A cat can most likely jump over it to the other side, especially if they know that room is theirs. We have a baby gate at our house (similar to animal gates) to keep my niece out of the upstairs. We have 5 cats and they just jump on over.
Small breed puppies will go under, large dogs will charge through it.
It needs to be fixed in place without an "escape hatch".
Sorry.
I had to do something similar, but it was because my dog started jumping over the gate, so I put it higher up. your cats can jump high like at least 4 feet unless they are very old, I don’t even understand why the cat door is necessary at all, but it did work for me but only for a little bit. The problem is that the gate becomes unstable, if your dog is determined to try to fit under it and pushed on the gate it could fall.
Those cheap baby gates will eventually be to small depending on your dog, my dog started to jump over it, or just push it over, but she is like 50-60 pounds now also.
Well a baby gate is out already with a giant breed, won’t work, and you would also be surprised when a dog is determined, with that off the floor, I know at least my dogs, if they can fit their head under they will. Then they will try to push themselves under, but it usually just results in the gate getting knocked over.
My dogs still try to get under the futon, lol, it’s hilarious, she’s sideways, just pushing and pushing trying to get to the cat. Lucky for me she is scared of the basement steps though, so the kitty litter is safe down there.
Get one with the cat door
Mount on the floor
Make sure the cat door is small
Dog won’t be able to fit through the door but cats will be able too. Gate will be strong as it is mounted on the floor
Hope this helps!!!!!!
