What type of baby gate would be best to keep baby off stairs?

The bottom of the stairs is right in the play area. One side of the stairs is against the wall and the other side is kind of open. There is a metal railing that is more like one that should be on the stairs outside your house so there’s no real good way to attach anything on it and even if you could it is flimsy. What type of gate would someone in this situation recommend? I’m looking at something freestanding, but we also have hardwood floors so if its light, he’ll be able to push it out of his way. Also, I rent so putting in a different railing is out of the question. TIA!

We never put up gates in our house and our living room that we use is on the 2nd floor of our 3 floor house. So basically there is a set of stairs that will lead down to the first floor and a set to lead up to the bedrooms. I was always around to watch our daughter and taught her very early on that she couldn’t go up/down the stairs unless we were with her. You’d be surprised how smart babies are, may seem like at a young age they don’t understand but really they do. It will just take a lot of patience and consistency. She’s 3 now and to this day does not go up or down the stairs without asking us first.
