Nope, not going to happen. A ferret will go and do whatever they want!! Your ferret will never know what your trying to teach him, they don’t get that concept.
But, they are smart!! they will figure out ways to go in, on, around, behind, under, over….things you don’t want them to mess around with.
from experience…If a ferret see you go through a door, they too will NEED to go through that door! But…if you never open the door and go out it -when ferrets are out..they will never know the door is there and by pass it all together.
Putting a blocker/barrier up in front of the door way..will make your ferret scratch at the board or floor or wall. He will want in, he was in there the other day..so he wants in there now. If he does that then you’ll have to occupy him, with ferret fun games and you can teach him to come to a squeaky toy. So that if he starts digging at the doorway, wanting in …squeak the toy and he could come to you.he will need to have training (im not going to type out how to train him, unless you ask..cuz sometimes i spend more time sharing my knowledge..and people don’t even give a hoot)
Is it possible to trade rooms with your parents? Then the ferret can continue to hang out in that room. lol
Seriously, I doubt you can but you might try spraying the doorway w/bitter apple. You can get it at any of the pet stores. It’s to keep dogs from chewing on things. Our dog chews the door frame when we’re gone. All we have to do is spray the area and she won’t go near it.
Also, (you probably do but) do you have a bell around her neck so you can hear when she’s going that direction? Of course that entails constantly getting up. Perhaps you’ll have to just limit the amount of time outside of the cage if you don’t want to gate the hall off, or the doorway. Have you considered getting another one? Two is sooo much fun! They just play & play! But what a handful they are! My sister used to have two of them. They have so much energy. So I opted for Chinchilla’s. They too, can get into just as much mischief but there’s nothing like a ferret. They NEVER grow up! Good Luck!
I know you said no barriers but tbh its impossible without having one i would suggest a solid wooden barrier that is too high for the ferret to climb/jump but small enough for your parents to step over? Tbh also i would let her go in there as much as she wants for a while and then she will get bored of going in there. I would also suggest getting another ferret to keep her company and for her to play with as that will distract her.

This is not a hard question to answer at all. It can’t be done without cages or gates or a closed door. Ferrets are very independent and curious creatures as you may have found out by now and it’s virtually impossible to keep them out of any place they find interesting. Sorry.
you should be caging your ferret at night, there are so many things a ferret can get into and get hurt on with no supervision… I just had my 6 out in my room alone and they were a holy terror. They’re not trainable like dogs, and even then dogs don’t listen as well enough to stay out of a room like that without a door shut or gate.
