URGENT, need help for dogs about to lose their home!?
I need desperate help from anyone who has some advice. My parents own 5 inside dogs, 3 females and 2 males. One of the females went into heat earlier this month (and is still in heat) and at the time both male dogs were intact… Well, they started fighting, BADLY, like drawing blood fighting. My parents got the oldest one emergency neutered. They couldn’t afford to have both neutered at the same time. The younger one has an appointment to be neutered later this month, the female will be spayed as soon as a vet says it’s safe to do so. The dog was neutered about two weeks ago, I gave them some pet-eze advance care calming liquid, my vet said it was the strongest otc stuff she knew of that we can get around here… The dog has been receiving this twice to 3x daily for the last 4 days…
Last night the dogs drew blood on one another again, and tonight they are constantly scrapping. My mother and stepfather are both disabled and it’s wearing them out having to seperate these dogs constantly…. They also cannot physically step over baby gates so they can’t use those… My parents are about to sell the female and the neutered male, even though I know that would literally break my mother’s heart, she loves these dogs like children, especially now that my brother and I have moved out of the house…
What else can they do??? I thought neutering would help, but obviously it hasn’t and neither has the advance care calming stuff… I really don’t want my mother to have to get rid of her babies… but I don’t know what else to tell her.
Edit: They’re going to call tomorrow and try to get another emergency neuter for monday.
No, I can’t personally watch them, I live in an apartment where only one dog is allowed, and I have a dog, and my brother is staying with me for now…
And yes, all the dogs are pure bred, they have one (15 year old) chihuahua, 2 dachshunds and two yorkies.
Kay, well like i said, they ARE going to get the female spayed, as soon as a vet says it’s okay to do so…. I’m not saying my parent’s aren’t "in over their heads" they certainly aren’t hoarders though, they have FIVE, I know PLENTY of people with easily double that amount… it’s VERY common in the countryside, where they live at. They can afford to feed, house, basic vet care (by making monthly payments), the dogs are all utd on shots, they just felt as though speutering was more optional than it obviously is for them… They’ve been keeping unaltered dogs for 15 years and have only had one oops litter, and before now ZERO fighting, they thought they were managing them nicely… The truth is, the vet they go to charged 200 dollars to get the male dog neutered, they couldn’t afford 400 dollars out of pocket AT ONE TIME… it will cost more for the female, they’re doing it because they know now they need to.

When you love a dog like a child, you do what’s best for them. It’s like that episode of Hoarders I saw one time where this woman was a cat hoarder. She claimed she loved those cats like they were her babies, and yet they were wallowing in their own feces and urine. Some had been crushed to death under boxes that were stacked up everywhere. Most of them were ill and she couldn’t afford to get them vet care. She had like seventy cats in that house. It was appalling.
Getting the males neutered won’t make a lick of difference so long as the females are in heat and are allowed to continue to go into heat. The females need to be spayed. Have your mother contact the Humane Society. They will do spay procedures at a reasonable cost, or give you a voucher to have a discounted spay procedure at a participating veterinary clinic. The sad reality is that they have more dogs than they can afford and properly handle. Now they should all be kept separated from one another. The two males for the obvious reason that they fight atrociously, and they must be kept away from the female in heat, lest she end up pregnant and then your mom and step-dad would have more dogs on their hands.
Have her hire a pet sitter until the female is out of heat and the dogs are neutered. She could even pay for boarding at the sitter’s house, or at a kennel, until all of this is over with. It isn’t exactly cheap, but it’s a better than the alternative.
Otherwise, keeping them separated is the only thing she can do. Could you or your brother watch the dog for her?
Can anyone else take the males for right now? Like, you take one and your brother take one? (Or two neighbors, or two other family members…) After neutering, the testosterone does take a little while to leave the body.
You lock them in different rooms. I wouldn’t sell them, I would have a no kill shelter take them and have them evaluated to find a good home that fits their needs. Or if any of them are purebred look into a Breed Rescue which would be better. Its not always the testosterone that is the problem. Some dogs just don’t like each other.
The hormones dont go away that quickly…..they should have had them neutered when they first got them.
There are baby gates that you do not need to step over – they swing open — I have two of them.
They could also crate the dogs and let them out one at a time.
If they have a yard, they could also let the dogs outside separately.
