Safest place in an earthquake?

This item was filled under [ Pet Gate ]

I live in Riverside California in a sort of run down apartment building while I look for a house to rent. I believe it was built in the 70′s but im not positive. Anyways, I have heard many different things about the absolute safest place to be during an earthquake, but then I always hear something completely opposite!

I’ve been told for a long time to get under a table or doorway, but I was also told that those are the worst places to be! Someone mentioned the "pocket" that forms NEXT to a desk…but if you don’t want to be under a desk because it may collapse, why would you want to be NEXT to it since you’d get squashed when the desk collapsed anyways? My apartment is fairly small, on the lower level, I only have about 2 desks in the whole house, both of which are wobbly and my table isn’t so sturdy either. My door "frames" look like they wouldn’t hold up either, and outside there are tons of power lines, gates, etc. What would be the safest thing for me to do?

Also, I have 2 pet geckos living in a tank right now on a really heavy dresser, is there a good chance that it would tip over or crush the tank? Thank you so much, I am trying to get as prepared as I possibly can, you know…just in case :)

outside away from any buildings, trees, power lines, etc.

outside or in a doorway. if you stand in the doorway it is strong so it will be less likely to fall.
