Does my older 11 year old german shepherd know my 2 year old norfolk terrier is dead? How to cope w/ his death?

My norfolk terrier "Coffee" escaped whenever the electric gates opened. We always tried to go and get him but he was stubborn, so our guard went behind him and always brought him to us or coffee would return by himself. It was 9pm and my dad came from work. The electric gate opened and Coffee escaped. Sultan, our 10 year old german shepherd saw that since they were both in our outdoor area.My dad tried to get Coffee back in but he didnt come, so we hoped the guard would bring him back..but he wasnt nearby (he goes to check on the neighborhood at night, we didnt know that!:( )so, my brother left to a party on our neighbors house and didnt see the dog. By then it started drizzling. At about 10 30, it started raining strongly. I was already asleep im only 14.when my brother returned by foot from next door house, he saw Coffee laying in the middle of the road dead! he was just infront our neighbor house. he was laying on his side, as if he was asleep. there was no blood, nothing, he just looked asleep. there was only a little thin trail of blood about 3 inches long coming from his mouth. This is our theory: he got under a car for the rain´s protection, and when people from the party left, they didnt know he was under the car and swince he was asleep he didnt get enough time to come out of the car and therefore, he got hit. we think the trail of blood is when he tried to move. OR he got hypothermia, even though it was 20 C and there wo9uldnt be blood. we also think he could have been poisoned by eating, smelling our others neighbor thrash which has poison in it (but our dog was really smart and didnt eat anything, only ""nice" food haha.:Pso, he was buried about 50 m from our house in my aunt´s land.knowing his body is nearby makes me feel better. i didnt go to his funeral since it wasnt that type of funeral. he got buried for respect.to me he wasnt a dog.. i loved him as a friend…even as a brother. he was there for me always, always wanted me to pet him. i miss him, is as if one part of my heart just isnt there.three weeks have passed and i still cry for him whennever i think of him. how can i cope with his death.also, do you think our german shepherd saw him since there are small spaces through our ggates. im sure he saw him alive since he barked A LOT at about 11 30 and it was the type of alert he gave us whenever he saw him on the street. i miss him s lot, so much im crying while writing this:(:(:(he was the most loyal dog ever and im sure i wont find one like him ever again

I’m sorry your dog is dead. I would feel terrible too if it happened to one of my boys (they’re little terriers too about the same size as Coffee).

Yes, I think Sultan knows that he’s dead, particularly because of the barking. Plus, dogs are really sensitive to our moods and he can tell that you are sad.

Most likely, Coffee accidentally got hit by a car but it sounds like he probably didn’t suffer when it happened (the trail of blood doesn’t mean he tried to move, just that he probably had internal injuries). It wasn’t cold enough to cause hypothermia, even if he was wet, because Norfolks have an undercoat which keeps them warm, even when wet. Even if he was under a car, he would have moved in time. Also, if he was poisoned, you would know because of the vomiting. Sometimes these things just happen, because they’re accidents.

Dog lovers talk about the Rainbow Bridge which is where our dogs wait to meet us in heaven. So just know that Coffee’s just waiting to see you again.

Don’t worry about Sultan being depressed. Dogs are really resilient with things like this. He may be sad for a little but it shouldn’t last for very long. People normally feel sadder longer.

Again, I’m sorry for your loss. I’m crying for you, too. And while you may not find a dog just like him, it doesn’t mean that you won’t find another dog that you love as much.
