was my dog dog-naped? its a long story?
ok so i have a dog named oreo. we rescued him about a year ago. he is extremely well trained and does’nt do anything bad. about a month ago, we left the gate open and he chased a squirrel out of the yard wich is really weird because we leave them open all the time and he never leaves, so we decided that during the fall we had to make sure they were constantly closed.anyways, so these two teenagers(looked 18 or older) found him about two blocks down. he doesnt have a tag with our name and address yet but he does have his border collie rescue tag and vaccine tags. once we realized he was gone we drove around the neighborhood looking for him and calling him. a woman saw us and asked if we were missing a dog. she turned out to be the mother of the two teenagers. we drove to her house and got oreo back, when we thanked them the teens were glaring at us and they didnt say a word. the woman said thats the kids wanted to keep him. and i cant blame them, hes a great dog. after this we went to the pet store and got him a tag with his name, our phone number and address. since then we havnt had any other incidents. but last night around 9:30, we let him outside to go potty, after about three minutes we called him in, but he didnt come. so we waited a little bit and called him again. still nothing. i go outside to look for him and he wasnt there. all the gates were closed and theres no other way he could have gotten out because he cant jump the fence. so we leave to go look for him and after about 5min of looking we found him in the yard of the family that found him last. we called him and he came running to our car and jumped in. their house is a good ways away from ours and it was dark. theres no way he could have gotten that far, expecially when its raining and dark out. when we got home we checked the gates again and they were still all locked. somone had to of let him out, and we were all inside. was my dog dog-napped? should i report this to the police?
ok so i thought that i should add some more detail… there is no way he could have gotten out on his own and if he did, im sure he didnt turn around and close the gates before he left. there are no holes in the ground its a chain link fence that is relatively new and has kept all of our other border collies safe. and no there is nothing more to the story. if i was dumb and left the gated open i wouldnt have bothered doing this. and they did not return the animal we took him. if he did escape and they found him, then they prolly would have called, but they didnt. yes he is a border collie mix. but he is 10 years old and can barely jump onto my bed. and he is PROPERLY confined. i checked everywhere there was nothing. and yes i cant accuse them but i can suspect them and i do. there is no was he could have gotten out. and he doesnt like the rain or anything that might get him wet. ususally when it rains he just stands by the back door.

if this is a concern then don’t let your dog out alone. you could also take a chair out with you and sit at a dark corner of the house and watch to see if anyone is messing around where they should not be. if it is the kids then speak to their mother.
No – you should watch your dog to see how he is getting out though. You have absolutely ZERO proof that anything illegal happened.
I would say you need to put actual locks on your gates and watch your dog closely when you let him out to potty. No reason to call the cops, you can’t prove a thing.
Thats very interesting that it has happened a number of times. In your yard is there any holes or gaps where he could possibly get out of.
Go and see the families that he was in their garden and the mum of the teens that found him. They may be to do with it.
I hope Oreo doesnt go missing again…
Cool name Oreo by the way!
There’s more to this story than you are telling. Doesn’t make sense, how could the dog be LET OUT if the gates are locked???
Report what to the police? That for a second time you found him safe in a neighbors yard & they returned the animal?
Consider placing a lock on your gate and micro chipping your animal.
Take the animal out at night and you may just discover a clever escape route.
No, you don’t have any real proof that they did anything.
If you’re really concerned about it, keep an eye on him while he’s outside or even go outside with him. You could even set up a camera if you’re willing to spend the money.
Your parents should talk to their parents first.
I am sorry that this happened to you, and I wish you luck in finding him, but when you find him.(lets be positive, I am not going to say if, Ill say WHEN) please dont let him out anymore without keeping an eye on him. It is great that you started to lock the gate after the first scare, but since something is going on , you shouldnt let him out of your site when he comes home.
BTW youd be amazed how far dogs can travel. My old Poodle broke out of a 8ft tall enclosure and ended up over 7 miles away from home. The lock wasnt broke, noone came on property but somehow, someway he made it out. A few times. and used to break out of his wire cage in the house too. I still dont know how.
He is a Border Collie, right? Why do you assume that he cannot jump the fence? They are very high energy and when they are after something (in this case, getting out of the fence), they will do what they can to accomplish it. He had escaped previously. Regardless of whether the gate is closed or not, he NEEDS to be supervised or walked on a leash. Border Collies are escape artists. Just because he was in their yard doesn’t mean anything. That doesn’t mean you can accuse them of attempting to steal your dog. If they were trying to steal him, why wouldn’t they have brought him into the house?
Rain and it being dark doesn’t mean a thing for a dog. It may for us, but dogs are not like us. You need to be responsible and keep him PROPERLY confined and supervised while outdoors. You have had previous experiences with him getting out. It should be a wake up call. You’re lucky nothing happened to him.
