5 Reasons for Dog Barking Problems
I got up this morning thinking about how much uncontrolled dog barking really bothered me. That is due to laying awake listening to my neighbor’s insane pack of dogs barking at coyotes all night long. This gave me plenty of time to ponder all the many nearby dogs with barking problems, and the various reasons that caused these behaviors. It became apparent that my normally peaceful neighborhood, has more than its share of occasional dog barking madness.
Here is a short list of just a few of the most common reasons for dogs to engage in excessive barking . If your dog presents you with any of these types of barking problems, you will need to work with your dog to correct the problem. Unfortunately, the problem of your dog’s excessive barking will not just go away all by itself.
- Dogs will often begin their barking routine when they spot another dog or a stranger come into their field of view.Dogs instinctively want to guard and protect their territory and family so this behavior is quite understandable. This becomes an issue if the dog does not stop its barking after even after the stimulus has been long gone. When the dog no longer sees the object of his barking, he gets some positive feedback-thinking that his barking has scared it away.
- Often the problem begins when dogs respond to hearing other dogs- or in my neighbor’s case, coyotes- barking in the distance. You can train your dog to stop doing this if he is one of those talkative dogs. The issue of problem dog barking should be corrected, because it affects your neighbors as well as you.
- If a dog is feeling no self confidence and is insecure and stressed out, it is more likely that he will bark for just about any reason at all, even totally insignificant ones. Because they just aren’t feeling secure in their surroundings they will bark out of nervousness. These are the kinds of dogs that often bark on and off all the time unless their masters are with them. My friend used to have a very high-strung dog, which I once saw start barking vigorously at a leaf that fell down from a tree above. Obviously this dog was the epitome of nervousness. It doesn’t take a big leap of imagination to realize that this dog barked all the time-for nothing.
- A dog that is really lonely and bored may just start barking out of frustration-he wants to tell the whole world all about it. Dogs that are left all alone most of the time without attention and interaction are the obvious candidates for this barking problem.
- Sometimes a dog just wants your attention, and will continue to bark at you until he gets it-he doesn’t care if you are busy doing something else. If the dog respected its master as the Alpha dog, he would not be trying that. As a matter of fact, when you give in and feed him or play with him after he barks excessively at you for attention, you are actually teaching him that he can boss you around. My own Lab used to enjoy bossing me around when she wanted to play-she did have me fairly well trained at one time, till I realized it was a problem.
