LARGE dog gate/room barrier ideas…?
I have 3 Great Danes and a small problem. My living room is pretty open – no doors that separate it from the other rooms (2 doorways, about 5′ across). I can’t keep the dogs off the couch while i’m at work, so when i come home, there’s slobber and fur all over! i love my dogs to death, but i’ve just about had it! I’m not going to crate them (i have a "what if there’s a fire" fear). I’d like to keep them out of the room entirely, so i guess what i really need is some sort of "barrier" that will block them from the living room. does anyone have any ideas? I’ve looked at pet stores and they have baby-gate looking things but 1.) they’re not wide enough to go from wall to wall and 2.) they’re way too short (one of the danes can jump a 4 foot fence!). Please give me any and all creative ideas (and no, i’m not getting rid of them! haha).
Although my main goal is to keep them out of the room entirely, the slipcover idea isn’t all that bad…. anyone know where i can get a slipcover for a semi-circle sectional???
Thanks so much ilovemurphie for the links. My problem is that they’re only about 22" high… and my danes are almost 40" at the shoulder (one can jump a 4′ fence…) These would just be a hurdle for them! =)
Pam – thanks for the answer. I was talking HEIGHT, not WIDTH. My dogs are very tall, and while the floor may or may not support the gate, there is a bar that goes under the gate itself, and it would be a pain to high-step that everytime i went in/out of the room.

What about slip covers for your furniture – that can be whipped off and washed?
Other than that, perhaps French doors for your living room?
but the slip covers are cheaper.
I love Great Danes on the couch – and have happily lived with 4 or 5 of them at a time.
Perhaps you could put up french doors the kind that go from floor to ceiling on tracks that can close off the room
Check on the web for pet gates… I found some that went up to 84" and maybe even larger. They have walk through gates for you made in them and are not bad looking either. They do have some tall ones too. Or you can just get a couple of cheap blankets ( I got mine at goodwill for like 5 bucks) and cover your couches during the day.. this way the fur and drool don’t get on your couch and you can wash the blankets regularly.. good luck !!
I think your easiest solution would be to put slip covers on the furniture while you are gone!
This one should work. It’s REALLY wide. I acually bought it and it was TOO wide for my tiny doorway so i had to return it. the best part about it is that you can buy 1 foot extensions and just add on if you need more. Good luck!

Here’s another one. you can buy a 2 foot extension for it!

also, you could try putting slipcovers or blankets on your couches. Every time they get dirty/drooly you could wash them. secondly, make sure that the area you confine the doggies to is big enough for them to move around comfortably and i would recommend not confining them TOO long. access to outside would be really good too.
oh, here’s some more.

A simple solution could be the use of a device that gives them a shock buzz if they get on the sofa…it/they lie on top of the cushions and only function if lied on…..check out the web for them…hope this helps…
the pressure gate that Ilovemurphie is 52 1/2 " wide and you can get extentions for it. These kind of gates do not need to be all the way down to the floor. You can raise it up off the floor, the floor doesn’t support the gate in any way.
My daughter actually found this on a pet website somewhere – pick up some of that plastic rug runner (the kind you put over your carpet to keep it clean) and turn it UPSIDE DOWN on your couch – supposedly they will jump up and get poked by the little bumps but not hurt, and will not want to lay down! I never did try it – just picking up the cushions on my couch did the trick.
We couldn’t find anything suitable either. I have 2 Bloodhounds and a Newfie. We went to Home Depot and got some plastic lattice. We framed it and screwed it with mollies right into the wall with a latch. It has a track. While Martha would not be amused, it does work. Another option would be a door or louvers. That gets spendy. I think our contraption ran $20.
I have canvas covers on my couches. Shop around.
