Keeping cat in, and lettting dog come and go?

This item was filled under [ Pet Gate ]

We have to let our 20 lb rat terrier come and go from the backyard as he pleases during the day, but are trying to figure out how to keep our cat in. We don’t have a lot of money to spend on buying one of those fancy electronic pet doors. Is there any other options? I don’t want to keep our cat locked in a room when we’re gone, but we don’t know what else to do. Is there a way to keep the cat from going down the stairs (i.e. baby gate)?

Baby gates wont work, theyll jump right over them. Does the dog really need free access to the outside world 24/7? Keep a gate over the open doggy door when your not home so the cat isnt getting outside and when youre home take it away so youre watching the cat if he sneaks out you can catch him. If you dont want that then youll have to keep the cat in a room all the time. There isnt a full proof way to keep a cat away from such things, their nosey. The only way to keep the cat in would be to block off the doggy door or keep the cat in a room while youre gone, plain and simple.

Why can the dog come and go, but the cat can’t? Are you near a busy street? If not, then let the cat go outside, too. Cats love this and find a lot of things to do. Otherwise, eliminate the door, or have an enclosed kennel on the other side of the door, where no one can actually get out. Just outside, but not past the kennel.
