There aren’t many things that are more fun than getting a puppy. But, the fun quickly dies once he’s destroyed one of your favorite pairs of shoes. But, if you start training your pup as soon as he comes home, a lot of your pain and frustration can be avoided. Proper training will lead to a well mannored dog that will be your best friend for years to come.

If you do some searching, you’ll probably see that there are several ways you can go about how to train a puppy. Whichever mether you pick, you should always keep a few basic puppy training rules in mind. One of the keys to effective dog training is to use positive reinforcement. Using negative reinforcement can have significant negative effects such as agression. The second keys to puppy training is consistency and patience.

Things You Should Begin With

Consistent rewards should always be given when your puppy does the right thing. Make the reward something like a dog treat or a good belly rub. Always remember that since your puppy is so young, it may take a little while for him to get the picture. For example, your dog doesn’t insinctively know that it is wrong to pee in the house.

Some areas to focus on from the beginning are house training, simple commands like sit and stay and leash training. This early training will help your dog bond to you and understand that you are the leader. Your best bet is to make sure you do short training sessions that are full of fun.

If you don’t stick with it early on, your dog will develop bad habits that you’ll have to correct later. Make sure you take the time to train your puppy right. Don’t give up, be patient and your puppy will eventually get it.

Is Crate Training Important?

Crate training a puppy is a really good idea unless you plan on being home 24/7. Crate training gives your dog a “den” to stay in when you are away. Crates can stop dog separation anxiety and protect the chewable things in your home while you are out. If you are having trouble housetraining your dog, you should look into crate training.

There are a few tricks to teaching your puppy that his crate is a same and comfortable place. Fill his crate with his favorite toys and treats. You should never make him go into the crate when he doesn’t want to. Don’t do anything to make your puppy think that the crate is an unfun place to be.

Helpful Hints for Housetraining

As you know, an important part of training is housebreaking your puppy. Housetraing only works by taking your puppy outside and rewarding him when he “does his business”. You won’t get very far if you just use discipline when he goes inside. Take him outside to the proper area and don’t leave until he has used the bathroom. Once he’s used the restroom, give him lots of praise.
